A pulse oximeter is essentially a device for measuring blood oxygen saturation, which reflects the oxygen concentration in human blood.As we all know, oxygen is one of the essential elements for human survival. Oxygen combines with hemoglobin in the blood and is transported through blood vessels to all parts of the body. Blood oxygen saturation refers to the proportion of hemoglobin bound to oxygen in relation to the total amount of hemoglobin capable of binding oxygen.
Normally, human blood oxygen saturation is above 95%. If it falls below 95%, it means the body is not receiving sufficient oxygen and there may be cardiovascular or pulmonary problems. If it drops below 90%, it indicates severe hypoxia and hospital treatment may be required.

A pulse oximeter consists of a microprocessor, memory (EPROM and RAM), two digital-to-analog converters that control the LEDs, components for filtering and amplifying the signal received by the photodiode, and an analog-to-digital converter that digitizes the received signal and sends it to the microprocessor. The LEDs and photodiode are placed in a small probe that contacts the patient’s fingertip or earlobe. A pulse oximeter is generally also equipped with a small LCD display.
Simply put, it is made up of three parts: a light emitter, a light receiver, and a data-processing module.
There are two types of hemoglobin in human blood: oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin. These two proteins absorb red and infrared light differently. (Compared with deoxyhemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin absorbs more infrared light and less red light, while deoxyhemoglobin behaves in the opposite way.) The pulse oximeter has diodes that emit red and infrared light. The light beams pass through the finger and reach the detector below, which then sends the signal to the data module to calculate the wearer’s blood oxygen concentration. Based on the readings, the wearer can understand their blood oxygen health status!
